To keep the city of Mechelen pleasant to live, acessible and safe, a completely new traffic plan was introduced in 2011. Vehicle access to numerous streets was prohibited during certian periods of the day to reduce the amount of traffic in the city and improve the air quality. The city of Mechelen has achieved an improtant step in improving its sustainable and smart mobility. Less than two years after the introduction of the car free zones, an first assessment was carried out. Several criteria were assessed. Traffic reduction and air quality measurements were made in conjunction with a resident satisfaction survey analysis following a drop in complaints. Overall the assessment was positive. A few minor adjustments were made to respond to the main remarks. Both the procedure and the online application have now been simplified, access for the disabled made easier and an additional car park provided. Some one hundred icar cameras together with M³ back-office are supporting the city's mobility policy.
Access control for the Bordeaux ring road
The Bordeaux ring road is systematically subject to traffic jams at peak hours. In order to limit this inconvenience, the DDE entrusted Macq to install access ramp controls. Traffic lights authorise vehicle passage on an intermittent basis according to the level of occupation of the main road. This control was inspired by the algorithm used to try and maintain the main road below its saturation threshold. There is no use dashing for the ring road if it is saturated.
The city of Turnhout has installed a significant number of our cameras (Belgium)
The city of Turnhout has installed a large number of our registration plate recognition cameras throughout its region. The city of Turnhout in northern Belgium was looking to improve its management of heavy goods vehicles. It was looking for equipment capable of generating traffic statistics for heavy goods vehicles both in the city centre and on access roads. Macq registration plate recognition systems perfectly meet this demand and have created additional functions equally profitable to the community. Thanks to Macq installations the city can now:
- monitor heavy goods vehicle transit in accordance with authorised times and days,
- determine average speed on the road network enabling local police to give fines for speeding offences recorded in the system,
- identify and instantly intercept vehicles wanted by the police.

Virtual toll gate for the E5-E40 link in Liège (Belgium)
The E5-E40 motorway link crosses the city of Liège by a succession of infrastructures: three tunnels and a suspended bridge whose tunnel goes under the river Cointe. Inaugurated in 2001, the site has a virtual toll gate requiring the counting, classification and identification of all vehicles using it. Identification is carried out either through the detection of a remote toll badge embedded in the vehicle or by automatic number plate recognition. Counting and classification are carried out by means of precision laser scanning. Two pairs of cameras are fixed on each lane in both directions at two different points of the road section. These read and record the number plates and take accurate average speed measurements.
MOT test centres are equipped with number plate readers (Belgium)
There are often long queues at automobile technical inspection centres. The Macq iCAR system has made improvements in this field. "Autosécurité", who operates the centres has a significant track record in long waitng times. Macq has installed vehicle license plate readers which have improved acces to the centres. On arrival, the vehicle is identified, the driver can prepare the necessary documents and may even be directed to a fast lane if his profile permits.
G.S.K. Car Parks and Macq (Belgium)
Glaxo-Smith-Kline (G.S.K.) has chosen Macq registration plate recognition software to equip its automatic access system in one of its major car parks. More than 6,000 people work for Glaxo-Smith-Kline in Belgium. The company chose the Macq registration plate recognition system to create an automatic access system in one of its major car parks at the Rixensart site. Every day, a large number of vehicles approach the access barriers to the Rixensart car park. The stop time required for users to present their badge creates long queues. Automatic registration plate recognition accelerates this process and reduces the queues
Paris: calculate and display journey time on the ring road (France)
"Counting data from the Paris ring road is collected by our equipment to calculate and display journey times. 1,300 counting loops are distributed throughout the Parisian ring road. All of this data is managed in real-time by Macq equipment. Loop detection provides vehicle passage contacts which are recorded in our systems and integrated to produce flow, occupancy and speed data. The results are then used to calulate journey times, which are displayed on the variable message signs located throughout the ring road and on the Paris traffic websites."
Macq manages the motorway network in the Brussels-Capital region (Belgium)
Macq has installed systems along motorway sections in the Brussels-Capital region to manage the variable message signs (VMS) and collect traffic data using loop detectors. The counting functions collect flow, occupancy and speed data. This information is then transmitted to Mobiris, the Mobility Centre in the Brussels region which also controls the VMS. Motorways in this region are comprised of a portion of the ring road and approach roads leading in from Ghent, Antwerp, Liege and Namur.
MOBIRIS mobility centre manages safety and fluidity of the road network (Belgium)
The MOBIRIS mobility centre aims to optimise traffic fluidity and guarantee safety on the major roads of the Belgian capital. MOBIRIS operates 24 hours a day and is equipped with screens which broadcast information sent from Macq systems distributed throughout the road network. Operators can thereby react efficiently to each alert transmitted and maintain maximum safety accross the network.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) management - Vlaams Verkeer Centrum (Belgium)
"The Flemish region has entrusted Macq to implement a dynamic management system for its major roads surrounding the city of Antwerp. VMS and dynamic signs are managed from the control centre and control traffic flow on a lane by lane basis. "
SRWT intersection controller (Belgium)
"The SRWT entrusted Macq to install traffic light control stations which are also used to manage public transport priorities. Within the scope of a new light-weight metro line in the north of the city of Charleroi, the Walloon Regional Transport Company (SWRT) placed an order with Macq for the installation of traffic light controllers. The intersections control tramway passage by guaranteeing optimal priority via specific sensors and appropriate programming."
SPW intersection controller (Belgium)
For over 20 years, Macq has been providing, programming and commissioning traffic light control stations for intersections in the Walloon region. The SPW, Walloon Public Service, has entrusted Macq to equip its road network with traffic light controllers. Macq has installed several hundreds of intersection control boxes equipped with GALILÉE and GALLERY controllers produced under the Garbarini brand. Each intersection is programmed and commissioned by our service as per the operating modes defined by the region.
Implementation of Low Emission Zone in Brussels (Belgium)
Like Berlin and Paris and other cities, Brussels will soon implement a low emission zone to improve the city's air quality. Macq technology - iCAR CAM cameras and Macq Mobility Management (M³) - has been chosen for this. From January 2018 the most polluting vehicles will be banned from the Brussels-Capital region. In the first phase, the ban will only apply to very old diesel vehicles. The rules will become more stringent in later years. The progressive implementation of the low emission zone will give individuals and businesses affected by the measure time to replace their old vehicles and adjust their mobility behaviour.
